  8. This package is open source software; you can redistribute it and/or modify

  13. - the "Artistic License" which can be found in the included file called

  21. For those of you that choose to use the GNU General Public License,
  22. my interpretation of the GNU General Public License is that no procmailrc
  23. script falls under the terms of the GPL unless you explicitly put
  24. said script under the terms of the GPL yourself.

  26. -------------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS -------------------------------

  28. Any *NIX-alike (or POSIX compliant) system.
  29.  
  30. Sendmail, ZMailer, smail, MMDF, mailsurr or compatible mailers (in effect any
  31. mailer that can process RFC-822 compliant mails).
  32.

  38. The procmail mail processing program. (v3.13.1 1999/04/05)

  40. Can be used to create mail-servers, mailing lists, sort your incoming mail
  41. into separate folders/files (real convenient when subscribing to one or more
  42. mailing lists or for prioritising your mail), preprocess your mail, start
  43. any programs upon mail arrival (e.g. to generate different chimes on your
  44. workstation for different types of mail) or selectively forward certain
  45. incoming mail automatically to someone.
  46.  
  47. Procmail can be used:
  48.     - and installed by an unprivileged user (for himself only).
  49.     - as a drop in replacement for the local delivery agent /bin/mail
  50.       (with biff/comsat support).
  51.     - as a general mailfilter for whole groups of messages (e.g. when
  52.       called from within sendmail.cf rules).
  53.  
  54. The accompanying formail program enables you to generate autoreplies, split up
  55. digests/mailboxes into the original messages, do some very simple
  56. header-munging/extraction, or force mail into mail-format (with leading From
  57. line).

  61. We made the utmost effort to make procmail as robust as any program can be
  62. (every conceivable system error is caught *and* handled).
  63.  
  64. Since procmail is written entirely in C, it poses a very low impact
  65. on your system's resources (under normal conditions, when you don't
  66. start other programs/scripts from within it, it is faster and more
  67. robust than the average /bin/mail you have on your system now).
  68.  
  69. Procmail was designed to deliver the mail under the worst conditions
  70. (file system full, out of swap space, process table full, file table full,
  71. missing support files, unavailable executables; it all doesn't matter).
  72. Should (in the unlikely event) procmail be unable to deliver your mail
  73. somewhere, the mail will bounce back to the sender or reenter the mailqueue
  74. (your choice).

  80. However, as with any program, bugs cannot be completely ruled out.
  81. We tested the program extensively, and believe it should be relatively
  82. bug free (no known bug at the time).  Should, however, anyone find any
  83. bugs (highly unlikely :-), we would be pleased (well, sort of :-) to hear
  84. about it.  Please send us the patches or bug report; you can reach
  85. us by E-mail at <bug@procmail.org>.
  86. We'll look at them and will try to fix it in a future release.
  87. (BTW, if you should find any spelling or grammar errors in these files,
  88. don't hesitate to point them out to me; we like correct English just as much
  89. as you do).
